Serena Williams Gets a Barbie Doll Inspired by Her 2005 Australian Open Win

Serena Williams is getting the Barbie treatment, and this one comes with a little tennis history.

Mattel has unveiled a collectible Barbie Signature doll inspired by Williams’ 2005 Australian Open victory, when she secured her seventh Grand Slam singles title. The release celebrates the tennis icon’s achievements and her influence on the next generation of girls.

The doll recreates her green-and-white court look, complete with a mesh-detailed cutout top, white skirt and matching sweatband. Her curly hair features a lighter blonde shade, reflecting her current appearance.

But this release means more to Williams than a miniature version of a winning outfit. Growing up, she had limited access to Black dolls, making representation an important part of the collaboration. She also helped shape the doll’s final appearance, paying close attention to its complexion and hair texture.

Now a mother of two daughters who love playing with Barbies, Williams sees the release through another lens, too. For young fans, the doll offers a chance to see a Black woman who changed the sport represented in their toy box.

The launch also aligns with the International Day of the Girl and Mattel’s wider efforts to celebrate women whose achievements can inspire children. As part of the release, the Barbie Dream Gap Project is supporting Mrs. Rina’s House of Blessings in Florida through a donation for youth education and leadership initiatives.

The doll is available now through the Mattel Creations website and select retailers.
