Apple x Issey Miyake: The iPhone Pocket That Redefines Tech and Fashion

Some collaborations feel inevitable — like constellations that finally align after years of orbiting each other. Steve Jobs and Issey Miyake never officially shared a project, but their creative spirits—one rooted in technological precision, the other in sculptural simplicity—were always in quiet conversation. Now, nearly a decade after Miyake’s passing and long after Jobs left his mark on design history, their legacies meet in a product that feels less like an accessory and more like an idea beautifully realized: the iPhone Pocket.

This minimalist rectangle of 3D-knitted fabric is a study in duality—playful yet pragmatic, tactile yet technological. Drawing from Miyake’s Pleats Please universe, the iPhone Pocket stretches, flexes, and folds with architectural ease, designed to cradle both iPhone and identity in equal measure. Available in two sizes—one wrist-length, one crossbody—it comes alive in a palette that ranges from mandarin orange to peacock blue, colours that hum with quiet optimism.

The collaboration itself unfolded like a slow jazz improvisation. Yoshiyuki Miyamae, Design Director at Miyake Design Studio, likened the creative process to “a jam session,” one where both Apple’s industrial designers and Miyake’s team riffed freely, sketching ideas that blurred the lines between tech and textile. The mutual curiosity became its own rhythm—an exchange of philosophies rather than just functions.

Even the packaging nods to both worlds: frosted paper sleeves inspired by Japanese festival sweets, engineered with Apple’s signature precision. It’s the kind of detail that turns an unboxing into a ceremony—an echo of childhood wonder translated through modern craftsmanship.

More than a holder for devices, the iPhone Pocket feels like a small manifesto. It acknowledges how technology has become personal—worn, styled, and carried like clothing. It bridges two languages of design: Apple’s devotion to clarity and Miyake’s love of texture. And in doing so, it reminds us that innovation, at its most elegant, isn’t about invention for invention’s sake—it’s about reimagining what already connects us.

As Miyamae puts it, “Both these great masterminds are gone, but what we have in common is how we continue to challenge ourselves to be innovative, to create new and original things.” The iPhone Pocket isn’t just a product; it’s a moment of connecting the dots between the digital and the deeply human.

The Apple x Issey Miyake iPhone Pocket launches on 14 November, retailing at $149.95 (short) and $229.95 (long), available at select Apple Stores worldwide and online at Apple.com.
