Every November, the CFDA Awards roll around like fashion’s very own Met Gala — only this time, the assignment is less “thematic couture” and more “don’t bore us.” Last night’s ceremony at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City proved that the people who shape fashion can also serve it.
Hosted by multi-hyphenate powerhouse Teyana Taylor, the night was an unapologetic display of American creativity — and confidence. But before any trophies were handed out, the red carpet became a runway in its own right.
Teyana kicked things off in a bejewelled Thom Browne blazer, making suiting look sinful in the best way possible. “It’s a suit – but a Thom suit,” she told Vogue. “It’s so nasty, very suited and booted, and clean.” Translation: Corporate, but make it couture.
Then came the statement-makers. Amber Valletta revisited pop culture history in the same jungle-print Versace dress that once turned the 2000 Grammys into The J Lo Show. Meanwhile, Lily Allen leaned into subtle rebellion — a revenge look courtesy of Colleen Allen — pairing a minimal bra top with a matching skirt. (Her new album West End Girl might explain the energy.)
Meanwhile, inside the museum, things got even bigger. The CFDA — often called the Oscars of fashion — honored both household names and rising innovators. A$AP Rocky took home the Fashion Icon Award, joining a club that includes his partner Rihanna, who famously redefined “naked dress” back in 2014. Elsewhere, Cynthia Rowley and Jerry Lorenzo (of Fear of God) earned the Founder’s and Innovation Awards, while Donatella Versace accepted the Positive Change Award. Alaïa’s Pieter Mulier snagged International Designer of the Year, presented by none other than Naomi Campbell, and Sara Moonves of W Magazine was honored for excellence in fashion media.
