Celine has taken one of Reebok’s most recognisable sneakers and given it a very different kind of wardrobe.
The French fashion house has teamed up with Reebok to rework the 1982 Freestyle Lo, one of the earliest performance sneakers created specifically for women. Instead of leaving its sporty identity untouched, Celine strips the silhouette back and gives it a much sleeker finish.
The biggest change is in the construction. The familiar side vector overlays are gone, replaced with a cleaner shape made entirely from soft, pliable lambskin leather.
There are two versions in the collection, the Celine/Reebok Freestyle Lo and the Celine/Reebok Alldayeveryday Freestyle Lo.
The Freestyle Lo arrives in eight colourways, making it the kind of sneaker that can slide easily between sharp tailoring, denim and a dressed-up weekend look.
And that is probably the point. Reebok brings the sporting history, while Celine brings the Parisian polish.
The Freestyle has been around since 1982, but this collaboration proves the silhouette still has plenty of room to evolve.
The Celine x Reebok Freestyle Lo launches September 10 on Celine’s website and at select retailers. Exclusive regional colourways will also be available at Celine’s Wooster Street store in New York and Omotesando in Tokyo.
