Ciara’s Jersey and Cowrie Crown Just Said: ‘Know Thy Roots’

Ciara is repping more than just a look — she’s repping home. And we’re not talking L.A. luxury or red carpet sparkle. We’re talking green, gold and a full-circle moment that started centuries ago.

Fresh off being officially granted Beninese citizenship, the R&B queen turned up the volume with a proudly printed jersey featuring “Benin” across the chest, “West Africa” just beneath it, and a flag stitched in like a badge of honour. Add a glorious Afro, a crown of cowrie shells, matching earrings and bangles, and suddenly we’re no longer scrolling Instagram — we’re witnessing a living tribute.

The timing couldn’t be more poetic. Ciara’s post comes just days after a ceremony in Cotonou where she was recognised as a citizen under Benin’s new My Afro Origins law — a historic move offering citizenship to descendants of enslaved Africans. Her roots were traced back via Finding Your Roots, and now here she is, not just honouring them, but wearing them.

During her visit, she also walked the historic Slave Route in Ouidah, pausing at the hauntingly symbolic Door of No Return. A moment of memory. A moment of reclamation.

With every bead, shell and stitch, Ciara isn’t just giving us a fashion moment. She’s reminding us where we come from — and that looking good while doing so is a bonus.
