The legal proceedings involving the woman accused of shooting at Rihanna’s Los Angeles residence have taken a procedural turn, as a judge has ordered a pause in the case to allow for a formal mental health evaluation.

According to prosecutors, Ivanna Ortiz is facing multiple charges in connection with a March 2026 incident in which shots were allegedly fired outside the singer’s home, which she shares with A$AP Rocky. Authorities allege Ortiz drove to the property in a Tesla and discharged a firearm before leaving the scene. No injuries were reported, though it was confirmed that Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, and their three children were present at the residence at the time.

Following the incident, Ortiz was charged with 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and three counts of shooting at an occupied dwelling or vehicle. Prosecutors say the case was supported in part by online activity attributed to Ortiz, including videos and posts referencing the singer and containing erratic and threatening statements.

The Associated Press reports that a judge has now temporarily halted prosecution after questions were raised regarding Ortiz’s mental competence. During a closed-door session in Judge Shannon K. Cooley’s chambers, concerns were reportedly discussed about whether the defendant fully understands the legal proceedings and is fit to stand trial.

As a result, the case has been transferred to a specialised Hollywood mental health court responsible for evaluating a defendant’s ability to participate in their defence. The court will determine whether Ortiz is competent to proceed or requires further psychiatric care before trial can continue.

Deputy Public Defender Derek Dillman stated that ensuring the defendant’s mental competence is a necessary part of the legal process, noting that the court must ensure she is able to engage with her defence in a rational and informed manner.

Ortiz has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has denied any intent to harm Rihanna. Her legal team maintains her position as the case undergoes further review.

If found incompetent to stand trial, reports indicate Ortiz, who has no prior criminal record could be held in a state medical facility for treatment, potentially for an indefinite period, depending on future assessments.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for June 2.
