September 1, 2026 Mixed media artist Ololade Oletubo presents Mixed Reality, a solo exhibition at Afrahouse Gallery, London, bringing together works that explore the layered, shifting nature of how we see, remember and experience the world around us.
There is rarely just one version of reality. What we see is shaped by where we have been, what we remember, what we imagine and what we choose to hold on to. In Mixed Reality, Oletubo enters that space between the tangible and the felt, using mixed media to build a visual language that is both personal and open-ended.
Working across materials, textures and forms, Oletubo allows each piece to develop through a process of layering and discovery. Surfaces are built up, interrupted and reconsidered. Contrasts are allowed to remain. What might initially appear fragmented begins, on closer viewing, to reveal connections.
This way of working is central to the exhibition. For Oletubo, mixed media is more than a technique; it offers the freedom to bring different experiences into the same space without forcing them into neat conclusions. Material, memory and emotion meet on the surface of the work, each carrying its own weight.
The title Mixed Reality reflects this tension. We live simultaneously with what is in front of us and with the private worlds we carry within us. A place can exist as it is and as we remember it. An experience can be beautiful and uncomfortable at once. Something familiar can suddenly become strange.
Oletubo’s works sit comfortably within these contradictions.
Rather than telling viewers what they should see, the exhibition asks them to bring something of themselves to the encounter. A colour may stir a memory. A texture may feel unexpectedly familiar. A composition may mean one thing from across the room and something entirely different when seen up close.
At its heart, Mixed Reality is an invitation to look again not only at the works themselves, but at the ways in which our individual histories influence what we recognise as real.
